A Brief Overview of the COA's Corporate Partnership Program
California’s community colleges represent the largest system of higher education
in the world.
Intercollegiate athletic programs are a vital component of this system, with
nearly 30,000 student athletes each year. This presents a significant marketing
opportunity for potential sponsors of community college men's and women's championship
events.
In Summer 1998, the COA launched its first-ever comprehensive development
campaign. The strategic partnership campaign has created a number of substantial
partnerships for the COA, which has strengthened its commitment to providing
increased sales opportunities for partners at each of the 103 colleges. This
campaign provides partners with unprecedented access and exposure to the world’s
largest higher education market.
Consider:
- More than 2.4 million students are enrolled in California's public community
colleges
- The average size of community colleges is 12,300 students (Palo Verde College
in Blythe is smallest at 1,168 while City College of San Francisco is largest
with 86,000)
- Sixty-one percent (61%) of students are 35 years of age or younger
- Nearly 56% of the 2.4 million students are women
- There are approximately 71,000 full-time staff; 47,00 full-time faculty;
22,000 support staff, 1,800 administrators and 26,000 part-time Faculty
- More than 70,000 community college students transfer annually to universities
- More than 75,000 students each year go directly into occupational jobs
- Eighty-nine percent (89%) of students who complete their studies at a community
college register a 47% gain in wages after three years
The Commission on Athletics, the governing body for community college athletics
in California, currently sanctions state championship events in 20 sports. Individual
sport state championships - some of which are televised by regional companies
such as Fox Sports West and SportsChannel Pacific and local access stations coordinated
by many of the state's community colleges - produce printed and electronic materials
and offer a myriad of advertising and product exposure opportunities throughout
the academic year. In addition, opportunities exist which provide corporate partners
with individual campus exposure, research collaboratives, contract expiration
dates, names of key service and purchasing directors at each college, vendor product
display, in-stadium sponsor promotions, signage, and more depending on the level
of commitment and interest of corporate partners.

The COA proposes that an initial qualifying meeting be held with your organization.
This preliminary meeting, held at your convenience and site, will allow each
entity to discuss preferred methodologies, approaches, etc. before moving forward.
The COA understands that companies engaged in sponsorship marketing in its truest
sense are only interested in how the sponsorship can be leveraged to reach selling
and other tangible objectives.
