COA Releases Annual Athletic Recruitment Survey

Sacramento, CA . . . The board of the California Community College Commission on Athletics (COA) today announced the acceptance of its annual athletic recruitment report, a statewide information collection study of its 103 member colleges.

The report summarized a variety of important college and student athlete data annually reviewed by the COA board for its own decision-making. Specific elements of the report included data about the number of team members across all sports at COA member colleges, the year of competition for all men and women student athletes, and the high school location of each student athlete participating at COA member colleges.

The data generated the following observations: -Slightly more than 22,000 student athletes annually participate in COA athletics. Of that number, slightly more than 7,500 are women.
-For all women’s teams, with the exception of badminton and golf, more than one-half of players – 57% - came from in-district high schools.
-Excluding the men’s cross country teams, all men’s teams have a smaller portion of players – 33% to 56% - form in-district high schools as compared to women’s teams.
-Both women’s and men’s cross country teams have the greatest percentage of players from in-district high schools.
-Among men teams, wrestling and basketball have greater percentages of players from high schools outside the recruiting area but in state.
-Men’s basketball and football teams have relatively higher percentages of players from out-of-state high schools.

The Resource Group, the COA’s external research counsel, generated the annual report summary. The COA received responses from all 103-member colleges. The survey instrument was fielded in Summer 2000 and the report summarizes the type and mix of participants for the 2000-01 academic year.
