COA Announces Student
Athletes of the Month
Sacramento,
CA . . . The Community College League of California Commission on Athletics
(COA), in partnership with the California Community College Sports Information
Association (CCCSIA), today named Erina Hung (Saddleback College, tennis) and
Edino Steele (Pasadena City College, track and field) the COA Student Athletes
of the Month for May 2007.
Erina
Hung capped off her freshman tennis season during the month of May with
both individual and team awards, including a perfect, undefeated season in doubles.
During the month of May,
Hung was 7-3 in singles as Saddleback's No. 1 singles player. She won two dual-team
matches by defeating Ventura's top player, Ally Limon, in the regional semifinals
and defeating Sierra's top singles player, Jessica Miller, in the COA championship
by a 6-4, 6-0 score. All three of Hung's singles losses in May were to eventual
State Champion Jaleh Mazehari of Orange Coast. Mazehari defeated Hung in the
semifinals of the regional tournament, the semifinals of the state tournament,
and in the dual-team regional finals.
Hung got her revenge in
doubles play as she capped off a perfect year as part of Saddleback's No. 1
doubles team with Kathy Dennis. They began by winning the Ojai Tournament at
the end of April, where Hung was also the singles runner-up, then helping their
team win dual team playoff matches over Ventura and Orange Coast, followed by
winning the Southern California Regional doubles title, and then finishing off
the season by winning the state doubles title.
Hung finished the year with
a 27-0 record in doubles and a 23-7 overall singles record, helping lead Saddleback
to a state runner-up finish. It was the first time that Saddleback had reached
the state dual-team championship match in women's tennis.
Hung was named as the Intercollegiate
Tennis Association (ITA) Rookie of the Year as the top freshman tennis player
in the CCCAA and was also selected to the 2007 ITA All American team.
Edino
Steele, a Pasadena City College sophomore sprinter, was named the Track
Athlete of the Meet for his outstanding performance in the 2007 California Community
Colleges COA Championships May 18-19. Steele capped a remarkable two-year sports
career for the Lancers men's track and field team by winning four state meet
events, a first by a PCC athlete.
Steele won the 200m and
400m races, and was on both the Lancers' winning 4x100m and 4x400m relay squads
as he helped earn 40 team points. PCC captured the state team title, an achievement
that ended a 23-year drought for the entire Pasadena sports program.
Steele, from Pacific High
in New York and a member of the junior national Jamaican track team, was one
of four athletes given post-meet awards as coaches handed out trophies for Top
Track Athlete for both men and women, and Top Field Athlete for both genders.
Steele also won the same
four events (200m, 400m, 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay) at the Southern California
Championships. Last year, Steele was the 100m and 200m champion in the SCC and
the 400m champion at the SoCal Finals.
His 20.37 time set earlier
this year in the 200m during the SCC Prelims Meet is the fastest college time
in the nation. His state meet winning mark of 45.77 in the 400m was the fastest
community college time in the nation and third best for all colleges.
