COA Announces Student
Athletes of the Month
Sacramento,
CA . . . The Community College League of California Commission on Athletics
(COA), in partnership with the California Community College Sports Information
Association (CCCSIA), today named Vanessa Sautebin (Santa Monica College, track
and field) and Joseph Wood (Golden West College, swim and dive) the COA Student
Athletes of the Month for April 2007.
Vanessa
Sautebin won three events at the Western State Conference track and field
championships. The sophomore took first place in the 100m dash, the 100m hurdles,
and the 400m hurdles, all within a span of 60 minutes. Sautebin also posted
the top qualifying times in each event at the conference prelims. She currently
holds the fastest time in Southern California among community college athletes
in the 100m hurdles, and the third fastest time in the 400m hurdles. Last year,
Sautebin took third at the state championship in the 100m hurdles.
Joseph
Wood was named Orange Empire Conference championships swimmer of the meet
for the second consecutive year after setting two conference records, earning
high-point honors, and compiling an undefeated record at the OEC championships
in his two years as a Rustler. The sophomore took first place in all of his
individual events, including the 500 freestyle (4:37.79), 200 freestyle (1:41.58),
and 200 backstroke (1:52.68). Woods' time in the 200 backstroke set a new OEC
record. He was the anchor in another record-setting performance in the 800 freestyle
relay with a time of 6:56.05. Woods wrapped up this all-star performance with
a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay.

Men: Naseri Tumanuvao (Long
Beach, volleyball), Ian Starkie (Cuesta, swim and dive), Tarynn Myers (Citrus,
track and field), Ryan Shumaker (Cuyamaca, track and field), Bryan Paukovits
(San Diego Mesa, baseball), Crispin Tarango (Santa Ana, baseball), Steve Gibson
(Santiago Canyon, golf).
