COA Announces Student Athletes of the Month

Sacramento, CA . . . The Community College League of California Commission on Athletics (COA), in partnership with the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA), today named Vanessa Sautebin (Santa Monica College, track and field) and Joseph Wood (Golden West College, swim and dive) the COA Student Athletes of the Month for April 2007.

Vanessa Sautebin won three events at the Western State Conference track and field championships. The sophomore took first place in the 100m dash, the 100m hurdles, and the 400m hurdles, all within a span of 60 minutes. Sautebin also posted the top qualifying times in each event at the conference prelims. She currently holds the fastest time in Southern California among community college athletes in the 100m hurdles, and the third fastest time in the 400m hurdles. Last year, Sautebin took third at the state championship in the 100m hurdles.

Joseph Wood was named Orange Empire Conference championships swimmer of the meet for the second consecutive year after setting two conference records, earning high-point honors, and compiling an undefeated record at the OEC championships in his two years as a Rustler. The sophomore took first place in all of his individual events, including the 500 freestyle (4:37.79), 200 freestyle (1:41.58), and 200 backstroke (1:52.68). Woods' time in the 200 backstroke set a new OEC record. He was the anchor in another record-setting performance in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 6:56.05. Woods wrapped up this all-star performance with a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay.
