COA Announces Student
Athletes of the Month
Sacramento,
CA . . . The Community College League of California Commission on Athletics
(COA), in partnership with the California Community College Sports Information
Association (CCCSIA) today named Chelsea Butler (Golden West College, softball)
the COA Female Athlete of the Month and Mike Marcial (Fresno City College, basketball),
and Gavin Reid (Saddleback College, golf) the co-COA Male Athletes of the Month
for March 2007.
Chelsea
Butler is Golden West's ace pitcher as well as one of the leading hitters
for Rustlers. For the month of March, she accrued a 1.11 ERA against all of
the teams in the Orange Empire Conference as well as top-ranked Antelope Valley
and Citrus. Butler struck out 47 batters in 70 innings while allowing only 54
hits. During this period, she hit .273 with 7 RBI's, 3 doubles and 4 runs scored.
She has not made a defensive error in 23 chances. Butler's leadership has carried
Golden West throughout the season.
Mike
Marcial, a Fresno City College freshman point guard, earned Most Valuable
Player honors at the COA California Community College Men's Basketball Championships.
At the state tournament, Marcial scored 23 points (7.9 avg.), totaled 21 assists,
including 9 in the championship game (7.0 avg.) and made 5 steals. His three-point
play with 47 seconds remaining in overtime of the 103-99 quarterfinal win over
Compton set the tone for the Rams successful weekend. Prior to the Rams' playoff
run, the Central Valley Conference named Marcial the CVC Player of the Year,
as well as to the CVC All-Freshman Team.
Gavin
Reid played in eight (8) golf matches during the month of March, helping
Saddleback to a 51-2-1 overall mark against opponents during the month and a
7-1 record in Orange Empire Conference play. He has finished under par in five
of those matches, earning medalist honors three times. In eight events, he averaged
72.25 strokes per round. Reid, the 2006 Orange Empire Conference Player of the
Year who is committed to continuing his career at USC next season, fired a 2-under-par
70 on the California Country Club course to help Saddleback win the 20-team
Rio Hondo Invitational. He added a 1-under-par 71 on the El Prado course three
days later during a conference match. Two days after that, Reid carded a 4-under-par
68 to earn medalist honors at the Cottonwood Golf Course. Reid's best performance
came during a conference match on Saddleback's home course, a tough Tijeras
Creek Golf Club, where he posted a 5-under-par 67 to help the Gauchos defeat
Cypress, Palomar, and Santa Ana. One week later, Reid earned medalist honors
again as he shot a 1-under-par 71 on the Glendora Country Club course as Saddleback
tied for second in the Citrus Invitational. He closed out the month of March
with three consecutive rounds of 75 at Tijeras Creek, Indian Hills, and the
SCGA course. On the season, Reid is averaging 72.1 strokes per round through
14 rounds. Saddleback is 9-1 in conference play and 82-3-1 against all opponents.
