COA to Open 10th Annual Convention April 3 in Ontario
Sacramento,
CA . . . The Community College League of California Commission on Athletics
(COA) will open the 10th Annual COA Convention on April 3 at the Doubletree
Ontario Airport Hotel in Ontario, CA. The Annual COA Convention, which will
conclude April 6, is the largest yearly gathering of athletic personnel within
the world's largest system of higher education. The event is attended by community
college presidents, athletic directors, coaches, affiliate organizations and
COA corporate partners. The 2007 convention will feature the theme "Ride
the Wave!"
The convention has expanded
to four days in 2007, based on membership recommendations and the work of a
convention planning committee comprised of representatives from all COA affiliate
organizations. The new format will allow more time for professional development
sessions and forums to address the issues facing community college athletics
and COA member colleges.
"Our theme this year
represents a renewed focus on what we do and how we do it as an organization"
said COA Executive Director Carlyle Carter. "We are asking our members
not just to embrace change but be an active participant in the process. If it's
not broken we won't need to fix it but we should periodically review our operation
and policies to ensure that they are in sync. We are asking the COA membership
to 'ride the wave' of change."
Legislation of note to be
discussed and voted upon by the COA Management Council (Thursday April 5) and
COA Board (Friday April 6) include a name change for the "membership"
organization. The COA Board will continue to be referenced as the "Commission
on Athletics" and continue to fulfill their mandate to oversee and serve
as the regulatory body for California community college athletics. The membership
organization name, if approved, will be the "California Community College
Athletic Association" (CCCAA). In addition, the COA is entertaining ground-breaking
legislation to require compliance with Title IX in order to be classified as
a member in good standing.
Highlights of this year's
annual gathering include the Pepsi Celebration of Student Athletes Luncheon,
the COA Hall of Fame Banquet, and the "Honoring Our Own" Luncheon.
On Wednesday April 4, the
"Honoring Our Own" Luncheon will feature award presentations by the
COA's affiliate organizations.
The Pepsi Celebration of
Student Athletes Luncheon on Thursday April 5 will honor Jonathon Falcioni (Chaffey
College) and Mary Hanley (Moorpark College) as recipients of the 2006 Pepsi
Scholar Athlete Award, as well as 2006 Honor Roll members and Scholar Teams.
The California Community College Academic Advisors for Athletes (3C4A) will
also present achievement awards to Jason McClellan (Citrus College) and Monica
Macer (De Anza College) as well as special recognition awards.
On Thursday evening, the
COA Hall of Fame will induct four new members, Zelda Bolden (Mt. San Antonio
College), Denny Crum (L.A. Pierce College), James Newman (L.A. Harbor and Compton
Colleges), and Arnie Robinson (San Diego Mesa College).
