COA Announces
U.S. Bank Student Athletes of the Month

SACRAMENTO, CA . . . The California Community Colleges Commission on Athletics (COA), in partnership with the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) today named Jessica Scott (College of San Mateo, water polo) and Marcel Marquez (College of the Canyons, football) the COA/U.S. Bank Student Athletes of the Month for September.

Jessica Scott, a team captain for San Mateo, ranked as the second leading scorer in the state in September with 50 goals for the Bulldogs. The sophomore from Aragon High School has scored at least twice in each game this season and tallied a season-high eight goals twice in a loss to Cabrillo and win over American River. She finished 10th in the state last season on the way to 1st-team all-Coast Conference and 2nd-team all-Northern California honors. Most impressive is that Scott says could barely swim when she took up the sport five years ago. She is hoping to transfer to Sonoma State and become a sports therapist or a teacher.

Marcel Marquez led the College of the Canyons Cougars to a perfect 5-0 start in September, including a 3-0 mark in Western State Conference play. The sophomore quarterback from Notre Dame High School completed 79-of-133 (.594) for 1,022 yards and nine touchdowns while also rushing for a team-leading 262 yards and five more scores in the first month of the season. In week five against Bakersfield, he orchestrated a game-winning drive with less than five minutes remaining and connected on a four-yard pass with Billy Omahen with one minute left for a 24-23 win. The Cougars are currently ranked #1 in the southern-region of the COA/CCCFCA football poll.

U.S. Bank is the "Official Banking Services Provider" of the COA and California community college athletics. U.S. Bank is also the official presenting sponsor of all California community college championship events, including the 2005-06 COA Championship Festival in Fresno, CA.

U.S. Bancorp is the parent company of U.S. Bank. U.S. Bancorp is the 6th largest financial services holding company in the United States. The company operates 2,377 banking offices and 4,654 ATMs providing a full line of banking, brokerage, insurance, investment, mortgage, trust and payment services products to consumers, businesses and institutions.
