FRESNO MAINTAINS LEAD AND WINS WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP

By John Van Gaston for the COA

First-year Fresno City College wrestling coach Paul Keysaw did not disappoint the local fans who came out to see the Rams contend for the California Community Colleges Commission on Athletics Wrestling Championships Saturday night. He knew of the rich tradition in the community and rode the consistency of his squad, winning the state championship. The Rams finished the tournament by collecting their state-leading 47th individual state champion and amassed 135 team points to beat out second place Sierra College (127 team points), third place Santa Ana College (126) and fourth place Cerritos College (101.5).

Here is a breakdown of the championship matches:

125 - Ivan Sanchez (Santa Ana) def. Jason Carrillo (Cerritos), 12-4
Sanchez opened up a 5-1 lead after two periods and limited Carrilo to just four escape points to pick up the victory. He took quick advantage of an early takedown in the first period and rode Carrillo the remainder of the period. It was more of the same throughout the match and opened the championships up with a five-point team victory.

133 - Carlos Alaniz (Cerritos) def. Gabe Aguilar (Santa Ana), 13-7
After a near-miss by Aguilar in the first period with a quick takedown and two-point near-fall to take a 5-2 lead with 12 seconds remaining in the first period, Alaniz was able to get a quick escape and takedown to tie the match at 5-5 before the end of the first period. It was a 9-7 lead by Alaniz and 1:41 advantage in riding time by Alaniz, who carried that mometum into the final period and finished with a 13-7 win. The victory by Alaniz give the Falcons 46 all-time individual champions, which tied Fresno City for the most in the state.

141 - Leland Gridley (Sierra) def. Jose Serrato (Santa Ana), 4-2 (ot)
Both wrestlers spent the better part of the match waiting for the other to make a mistake. Gridley, however, was trying to generate some offense, as he attemtped eight shoots to just one by Serrato in the second period. However, the only shot by Serrato backfired and it allowed Gridley to record a takedown. In the third period, Serrato was able to collect enough riding time to forge a 2-2 tie, sending the match into overtime. With 20 seconds remaining, Gridley broke out of a shot by Serrato and was able to double-leg him and get the takedown and the championship.

149 - Alfonso Sanchez (Fresno City) def. Henry Kofa (Lassen), 3-1 (ot)

In a repeat of the previous match, neither wrestler was looking to take any chances on offense and each collected one escape point to send the match into overtime. Sanchez, who was looking to finish the year 39-0 was able to use his excellent escapability and slipped out of two shots by Kofe before working his way around him for a reversal and victory, which was also the 47th all-time individual state champion for the Rams.

157 - Devin Velasquez (Santa Ana) def. Sinai Pezzat (Fresno City), 2-1 (2 ot)
The theme of the night continued to be defense, as once again, both wrestlers waited to see if their opponent would slip up. It didn't happen in regulation, so the match went into overtime, where neither wrestler was able to record any points. That moved the match to two 30-second periods. Pezzat was down in the first period and was unable to get out for an escape point, although he had a chance late, but Velasquez held him off. In the second overttime, Velasquez got out with 21 seconds left and thought he won the match. But the remainder of the period had to be wrestled out and Pezzat was unable to escape and get a chance to score.

165 - Glen Shaw (Palomar) def. Nick Bardsley (Fresno City), 9-7

Shaw took his aggressive approach right to Bardsley and turned a tight 2-1 first period lead into a 6-2 advantage after two periods, which included a takedown with just one second left in the period. Bardsley was able to get closer due to a quick takedown, but Shaw came back with a late reverse in the third period and sealed the victory.

174 - Kyle Griffin (Santa Rosa) pinned Tom Eaton (Santa Ana), 4:36

In a battle of two #1-seeds, Griffin was able to record a second-period pin at a time when he was leading the match, 5-1. He took advantage of a missed shot by Eaton and recorded a takedown in the first period and then got another one late in the second period before it developed into a pinning opportunity. He was able to get Eaton's shoulders on the mat and collected the win.

184 - Tim Hawkins (Mt. San Antonio) def Jason Carrasco (Bakersfield), 8-4

Hawkins closed out his community college career with a 36-0 record this season and won his second straight state championship for the Mounties. After a scoreless first period, he picked up a takedown with 1:23 left in the second period and after two escape points by Carrasco, found himself in a 2-2 tie. But, in the third period, Hawkins was called for a stall and fell behind 3-2. It was a 4-4 match in the third period when Carrasco was penalized two points for a lock and Hawkins held on and completed his undefeated season.

197 - Jerred Dixon (Sacramento City) pinned Jayson Collard (Santa Rosa), 2:39

Dixon pulled the upset by pinning the top-seeded Collard late in the first period. After falling behind 2-0 with 1:12 left in the period, Collard was called for a stall, which made the match 2-1. Dixon seemed to feed off the fact that his opponent was not being very aggressive and made his move. He got his shot down and took Collard to the mat and got him on his back to win the state championship.

285 - Erik Nye (Sierra) pinned Brandon Doran (Cerritos), 4:34
The top-rated wrestler in Northern California concluded his season by pinning his third straight opponent to win the state championship. Nye was able to get a leg of Doran two different times and took him down, once in the first period and once in the second period. On the second takedown, he worked Doran to his back and got the win in 4:34 to close out the state championships. His win gave Sierra the six team points they needed to jump over Santa Ana for sole possession of second place in the team standings.
