FRESNO CITY REGAINS LEAD HEADING INTO FINALS

By John Van Gaston for the COA

Looking to hold off both Santa Ana College and Sierra College, host school Fresno City College takes a 14-point team lead heading into the championship round of the California Community College Commission on Athletics Wrestling Championships held at Fresno City College. The host Rams have amassed 131 team points and lead both Santa Ana and Sierra, who each have 117 points, while Cerritos has locked down fourth place and has 97.5 points heading into the finals.

However, the Dons of Santa Ana have five wrestlers in the state championships, while the Rams have three and the Wolverines of Sierra have just two. Additionally, Cerritos has three in the state championships. A win in the state championships is worth four team points, while a major decision (a win by eight or more points) is worth five points, a technical fall (a win by 15 points) is worth 5.5 points and a pin earns a team six points.

Sierra worked their way back into the top three by picking up two third place and three fourth place finishes, while Santa Ana slipped and saw their other competitors turn in a fifth and two sixth place finishes. Fresno City has held steady and will be the only team to have all 10 of their wrestlers place, as they have registered a third place, two fourth places, two fifth places, and sixth place and a seventh place finisher.
