Golden West coach Albert Gasparian became the first California community college coach to reach the 400-victory plateau Saturday as his team completed an impressive 4-0 week.
Gasparian passed the mark Saturday as the Rustlers participated in a four-team tournament at Santa Barbara City College. His 400th victory came in Golden West's morning match against the host Vaqueros, the 13th-ranked team in the state, by a score of 15-1, 15-5, 15-4.
Sarah Boogaard had 13 kills and Grace Boyd six for the winners.
Victory number 401 for Gasparian may have been even sweeter, as the Rustlers swept third-ranked San Joaquin Delta, the top-ranked team in Northern California, by scores of 15-3, 15-8, and 15-10 behind 15 kills from Boogaard and 11 from Natalie Snowden. Amanda Siler added 10 kills and 31 assists for the winners.
Gasparian, in his 18th year as head coach of the Rustler women, has a career mark of 401-37 (.916) through the weekend. His impressive record at the college includes seven consecutive state championships (1993-99), 11 state titles in all, and 16 conference titles. His 1998 and 1999 teams were both undefeated state champions. The Rustlers have currently won 74 consecutive matches.
