Orange Coast Caps Undefeated Season with State Title

FRESNO - Top-ranked Orange Coast wrapped up an undefeated season with a 22-30, 30-19, 13-30, 30-22, 15-12 win over the North's top-seeded San Joaquin Delta to win the 2005 state championship, Sunday afternoon at the California Community Colleges Commission on Athletics Women's Volleyball Championships presented by U.S. Bank in the Selland Arena.

Orange Coast (26-0) captured its fourth state championship and first since the 1982 campaign after finishing second in 2001 and third in 2002. The Pirates also won state titles in 1978 and 1980.

Tournament MVP Kiwi Winkler led the way for Orange Coast with 20 kills while Aabria Lipscomb added 15 and Joanna Johnson tossed in 10. Alicia Karver led the way for San Joaquin Delta (25-3) with 14 kills while both Francis Sandor and Ellie Cornfoot had 13 kills.

San Joaquin Delta was the only team to take a game off of the Pirates after Coast had posted a mark of 73-0 through the team's semifinal on Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs were up 2-1 after a dominating win in game three, but were unable to hold off the Pirates.

The Mustangs have finished among the top four for the seventh-straight season, matching their lone second-place finish from 2002. They also took third place each season from 1999-2001, then again each of the past two seasons.

San Joaquin Delta moved on for a rematch with Orange Coast after posting a 30-25, 30-15, 30-27 win over El Camino in the morning contest, giving the Warriors third place and their best finish since taking fourth place in 2001.
