Delta and Orange Coast Dominate Day 1

FRESNO - Top seeds Orange Coast and San Joaquin Delta swept their opening round matches to highlight Day One of the 2005 California Community Colleges Commission on Athletics Women's Volleyball Championships presented by U.S. Bank, Friday at the Selland Arena.

Coast got 16 kills from sophomore Samantha Connor to lead the way toward a 30-14, 30-20, 30-18 win over Fresno City while Delta got 17 kills from Alicia Karver to pace a 30-26, 33-31, 31-29 victory over Irvine Valley.

The two other South teams both moved on into the winner's bracket as L.A. Pierce and El Camino each posted four-game victories over West Valley and San Jose City, respectively.

West Valley avoided elimination in a late evening match by knocking off local favorite Fresno City in three-straight. The Vikings will take on the loser of the 10 a.m. winner's bracket clash between El Camino and San Joaquin Delta contest in a 1 p.m. elimination match.

San Jose City was the other first-round loser to survive a late elimination match, knocking off Irvine Valley in four games. The Jaguars will face another do-or-die contest at 1 p.m., facing the loser from the Orange Coast-L.A. Pierce contest at 10 a.m.
