Day 1, at San Joaquin Delta College, Stockton, CA
Friday, Dec. 3 Results

 

Game 1--South No. 3 San Diego Mesa (19-3) d. North No. 2 Taft (21-2),
30-23, 22-30, 30-15, 22-30, 17-15

Recap: The San Diego Mesa Olympians used 17 kills by Amanda Pfielschiefter and 15 kills and 13 digs by AVCA All-American Bri Beal to pull out a five-gamer over Taft. Mesa also had both Rayna Richardson and Melissa Ford in double figures in kills with 10 each, while setter Jessica Endean added 47 assists and 12 digs. Ford led the team with 17 digs. Taft was paced by All-State hitter Kaena Apana and Pikake Nutter-Gaudet with 22 kills each, while Janice Fonoti added 15 kills. All-State setter Lehua Yap had 56 assists. Taft will play Sacramento City in a 9 a.m. loser's bracket match Saturday. San Diego Mesa faces Golden West at 12 noon in the winner's bracket.

Game 2-South No. 2 LA Pierce (18-2) d. North No. 3 Butte (20-2),
30-21, 30-22, 30-21 at Marcopulos Gym

Recap: The Brahmas of LA Pierce swept Golden Valley champion Butte behind All-State outside hitter Tanya White's 14 kills and four blocks. Erin Lawhorn tallied 11 kills, making just one error in 16 attempts (.625 percentage). Setter Samantha Sullivan added 44 assists and Jenise Espindola 10 digs. For Butte, Melissa Page had seven kills, while Natasha Marquis scored six blocks. Libero Cassidy Smith also contributed 17 digs. LA Pierce plays the winner of the Cypress-San Joaquin Delta match at 12 noon in the winner's bracket. Butte plays the loser of that match at 9 a.m. in the loser's bracket.

Game 3, North No. 1 San Joaquin Delta (20-1) d. South No. 4 Cypress (12-9),
30-27, 23-30, 30-18, 39-37 at Blanchard Gym

Recap: The North top-seed Mustangs didn't disappoint their home gym crowd with a four-game win over the Cinderella Chargers of Cypress. Delta won a marathon fourth game at 39-37, the highest score ever in a state tournament match. Delta was led by Cindy Stayton with 27 kills and 14 digs, while Sarah Buhr had 20 kills and 15 digs. For Cypress, Breezie James spiked 19 kills and Tordra Sessions had 18 kills. Delta will face LA Pierce in a 12 noon winner's bracket match Saturday at Marcopulos Gym, while Cypress faces faces Butte in the loser's bracket at 9 a.m. (Blanchard Gym).

Game 4-South No. 1 Golden West (22-1) d. North No. 4 Sacramento City (17-5),
30-8, 30-26, 30-14 at Marcopulos Gym

Recap: The 11-time defending state champion Rustlers of Golden West blew away Sacramento in the first game en route to a sweep in their first round match. Golden West was led by Sarah Hudson with 17 kills (.471 hitting percentage) and All-American libero Katie Jackels with 19 digs. Chelsea Carroll had four aces and Ashley Miller contributed 35 assists. Sacramento made a strong run in the second game, tying it 24-24, before falling 30-26. Sac City was led by All-American Deja Sweeney with nine kills, 13 digs and five blocks. India Fayne added six solo blocks and Trisha Frudden scored eight kills and 12 digs. The Rustlers' Hudson had two straight kills to finish off the final game.
