RUSTLERS MAKE IT 11 STRAIGHT WITH SWEEP OF LASERS

IRVINE, CALIF. - Tournament MVP Ashley Jensen led all players with 14 kills and added five blocks as top-ranked Golden West captured its 11-consecutive state championship with a 30-21, 30-23, 30-13 win over tournament host Irvine Valley, Sunday afternoon at the 2003 California Community Colleges Commission on Athletics Women's Volleyball Championships in Hart Gymnasium.

Jensen, who helped the Rustlers to a sweep of San Joaquin Delta in last season's state finale, had just one error in 21 attempts for an outstanding .619 hitting percentage. The Rustlers tallied 13 blocks as a team to limit the Lasers to a .030 percentage for the match.

"Ashley is the most competitive player I've ever coached," said victorious head coach Albert Gasparian, who captured an unprecedented 15th state crown in 21 seasons. "She refused to let this team lose today."

Nicole Ryan tossed in 12 kills and eight digs while Rachel Gerling added 10 kills and nine digs. Brandie Genibrel led the way defensively for the Rustlers with 14 digs while Chelsea Carroll dished out 39 assists, fired two aces and added eight digs.

"I was scared to death for today, knowing (Irvine Valley) was going to be fired up playing in their own gym," said Gasparian, whose team capped a perfect season at 22-0. "Our blocking is really what sets us apart from everyone else and bails us out when we get into some tight spots."

Audrey Sipkovich had eight kills to lead Irvine Valley (19-5), while Tiffany Trgovac and Kim Mattis both had six. Nicole Moon paced the defense with 18 digs while Mattis added 15 and Trgovac had 13. Katie King dished out 24 assists and added 10 digs from her setter position.
