RUSTLERS ADVANCE TO STATE FINAL WITH SWEEP OF VIKINGS

IRVINE, CALIF. - Sophomore outside hitter Nicole Ryan led all players with 19 kills to lead the South Region's #1-ranked Golden West to a 31-29, 30-22, 30-24 win over North 2nd-seeded West Valley in the first semifinal match at the 2003 California Community Colleges Commission on Athletics Women's Volleyball Championships in Hart Gymnasium on the campus of Irvine Valley College.

Sophomore outside hitter Brandie Genibrel added 11 kills and 13 digs while hitting at a .409 clip and defending state tournament MVP Ashley Jensen added 10 kills for the 10-tmie defending state champions. Chelsea Carroll dished out 25 assists while Megan Wood tallied 12.

"I thought our two outside hitters played really well tonight," said victorious head coach Albert Gasparian, "We've beat Irvine Valley twice and Delta once, but we still have to come out and play tomorrow."

Sophomore middle blocker Erin Murphy led West Valley (23-3) 12 kills while sophomore middle blocker Denise Cooper added nine and sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Davies had seven. Sophomore setter Malia Peneyra led all players with 35 assists and sophomore defensive specialist Danielle Orong tallied a match-best 16 digs.

Golden West (21-0) advances to tomorrow's state championship match against the winner of the Irvine Valley/San Joaquin Delta match at 1:30 p.m.
