Hyundai California Community College Women's Volleyball Championship
By Robert Lewis

(PASADENA)-Golden West College captured its ninth straight state title Dec. 2 at the 2001 Hyundai-California Community College Women's Volleyball Championships at Pasadena City College.
The Rustlers came into the tourney as the No. 2 seed in the South region, No. 3-ranked in the state, and only the second place team from the Orange Empire Conference. However, Golden West exacted some revenge on the teams ahead of them in the rankings, Orange Coast College and San Joaquin Delta College.
Golden West (22-3) won all five of its matches at the tourney and capped it by sweeping Orange Coast, 30-15, 30-20, 30-21, in the finals match of the double-elimination event. The Rustlers have won 36 consecutive State Tourney and regional playoff matches, dating back to the 1996 season.

Coach Albert Gasparian's Rustlers were led by 2001 State Tourney MVP Raimi Mitchell and All-Tourney team selection Roxanne Orsini. Mitchell tallied 13 digs, 3 solo blocks and 8 kills, while Orsini had a match-high 15 kills with a .519 hitting percentage (1 error in 27 attempts).

Orange Coast (24-3) set up the finals match by coming back from a 2-0 games deficit to eliminate previously No. 1-ranked Delta, 24-30, 23-30, 30-25, 30-22, 15-12. Krystle Davis tallied 25 kills and 5 aces, while Katja Muller scored 27 kills and 9 digs for the Pirates. For Delta, Carli Ross had 21 kills, while Jill Parmele chipped in 18 kills and 3 blocks. Davis, Muller and Parmele each were named to the All-State Tourney team.

Delta (26-2) clinched third place in the tourney for the second straight season by downing El Camino, 30-19, 30-17, 28-30, 30-26, in an earlier match. Parmele led the way with 16 kills and 13 digs and Leah Powers added 9 kills and 7 blocks. For El Camino, Meagan McConnell tallied 17 kills and 3 blocks. McConnell was the other All-Tourney selection on the six-player team.
