Flo
Hyman, 1954-1986
Flo
Hyman was one of the top players in the history of volleyball. She began
playing at her high school in Inglewood. She then went to El Camino College
where she dominated the competition. From El Camino, Flo went on to the
University of Houston where her teams twice finished in the top five nationally.
Following her collegiate career, she joined the USA National Team. She
spent 10 years, from 1974-1984, as the leader of the US team. She was
chosen to the All-World Team and named the Best Spiker in the world at
the World Championships. She was one of the most recognizable athletes
in US team sports. In Korea she was nicknamed "the Giant Pounder."
Flo also played professionally in Japan and would spend hours meeting
with her "fans" who followed her around like she was a movie
star.
Flo Hyman was a 4-time
USVBA All-American, a 1984 Olympic Silver Medallist, a 1977 USVBA National
Champion, and the 1977 USVBA Nationals' MVP. She is a member of the El
Camino Hall of Fame and the USA Volleyball Hall of Fame.
Flo Hyman tragically
passed away from Marfan's disease, a congenital heart disorder, while
playing in Japan. She was 32 years old.
