GROSSMONT STATE TITLE NOTHING LESS THAN PERFECT

CARLSBAD - Grossmont College wrapped up a perfect season with a perfect sweep. The Southern California champion Griffins scored a 5-0 win over Northern California champion Reedley College to claim the California Community College Women's Dual Team Tennis State Championship today at La Costa Resort.
Grossmont finishes with a perfect 23-0 record to win its eighth state title in women's tennis, the first since 1996. Reedley finishes at 18-2.
The Griffins clinched the title when No. 5 singles player Stephanie Irwin finished her 6-3, 6-4 victory over Kathy Mannlein. Grossmont started its run to the title when No. 2 Fabiola Borges topped Beth Warmerdam, 6-0, 6-2. Jill Moya, at No. 4, was next with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Rochelle Trinidad, followed by No. 1 Stepanka Folgetova's 6-1, 6-0 win over Nicole Sherfield. Laurel Brown, at No. 3, put Grossmont in command with her 6-3, 6-2 victory over Angela Pena before Irwin wrapped things up. Lauren Sambrano, who won her first set against Reedley's Kasey Sunamoto in a tiebreaker, was down by one game in the second set when her match was called due to Grossmont's 5-0 advantage.
