The California Community College Tennis Coaches Association (CCCTCA) added nine coaches to its Hall of Fame during the state tournament banquet and awards presentation held May 11 at the Atrium Hotel in Irvine.
The induction class of 2000 is comprised of: Dan Braden (West Valley College), Pete Brown (Los Angeles Trade Tech), Georgie Chivington (Chabot College), Tom Chivington (Foothill College), Benny Crigger (Long Beach City College), Pat Moorehouse-MacPhee (Santa Barbara City College), Jack Sanford (Santa Barbara City College), Jim Whalen (Ventura College), and Paul Xanthos (Los Angeles Pierce College).
Only two coaches had previously been inducted into the Hall of Fame Bob Rump of Grossmont College and Geri Shepard of Pasadena City College. Both were inducted in 1996.
Inductees are retired coaches who have been nominated by their peers and voted on by members of the CCCTCA. Each coach inducted in 2000 received community college coach of the year honors during his or her career.
Xanthos earned the state's first community college men's coach of the year honor in 1984 while Georgie Chivington earned the state's first women's coach of the year title that same year. Tom Chivington is the only three-time winner of coach of the year honors. He earned the men's coach of the year honor in 1985, 1994 and this season (2000). In his final match, his team fell to College of the Desert in the dual team state championship match.
Brown earned men's coach of the year honors in 1987, followed by Crigger in 1988. Braden earned the men's award in 1991 while Moorehouse-MacPhee earned the women's honor that same year. Sanford picked up the men's coach of the year honor in 1992 while Whalen was honored in 1996.
Brown (1993), Crigger (1995) and Sanford (1997) had also been honored previously with the community college tennis Service Award.
Tom Chivington was selected as this year's Coach of the Year for men's tennis while El Camino College's Steve Van Kanegan was selected Coach of the Year for women's tennis.
