Fresno City College captured the Hyundai-California Community College Women's Dual Team Tennis State Championship for the second straight year, defeating Santa Barbara City College on Thursday afternoon (May 12) at the Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club in Newport Beach.
With her team leading 4-1, Fresno's No. 4 singles player, Lisa Alberta, defeated Santa Barbara's Deidre Fine, 6-4, 6-0, to clinch the state title for the Rams. The 5-1 victory over Santa Barbara wrapped up Fresno's second consecutive team title.
In the No. 1 singles position, Fresno's Suzi Riley was able to get past the Vaqueros' Apolka Petruska, 6-3, 6-4. At the bottom of the lineup, Fresno's "baby boomers" had little trouble handling Santa Barbara's Generation X. Fifty-year-old Terry Babcock quickly disposed of Santa Barbara's Fabiola Farley at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0, while 45-year-old Jennifer Yanagi took care of the Vaqueros' Camila Ojeda, 6-2, 6-0.
