NEWPORT BEACH - Southwestern College freshman Katalina Romero captured the Hyundai-California Community College women's tennis state singles title at the Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club on Saturday (May 13) with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Georgie Dinham of Marymount College.

It was the third consecutive weekend that Romero and Dinham faced off and their fifth meeting of the season. Dinham won the first meeting in February, but Romero has won the past four, including last weekend's Southern California regional title and the Ojai Tournament singles crown two weeks ago.

Romero reached the finals by defeating College of the Desert's Nicole Lundgren (6-3, 6-2) earlier in the day. Dinham reached the finals be defeating Katarina Franjic of Citrus College by a similar 6-3, 6-2 score.

Romero finished the season with a 40-2 singles record. She is Southwestern College's first state champion in tennis.

In doubles action, Lundgren got some revenge for the singles semifinal loss as she teamed with Silke Martin to capture the doubles title with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Southwestern's Romero and Maria Altamirano.

Lundgren and Martin advanced to the title match by downing Pilar Houk and Mary Wright of Cañada College, 7-5, 6-2, in the semifinals. Romero and Altamirano edged Marymount's Dinham and Maria Pergamalis, 7-6 (8-6), 6-0. Dinham and Pergamalis had a 5-1 lead in the first set before Romero and Altamirano tied the score at 5-5. Dinham and Pergamalis also had a 5-1 lead in the tiebreaker before falling, 8-6.
