Mt. San Antonio wins tourney, tops poll

<Poll, Week of 11/10/03>

On the strength of winning their own tournament, Mt. San Antonio College became the second college in as many weeks to top the CCCWBCA State Poll. Contra Costa College dropped to the runner-up spot after an idle weekend. Ventura maintained third after their own idleness. Merced took a cruise at the Cuesta Tournament to keep fourth. College of the Canyons made their move to round out the top five.

The Mt. San Antonio College Tip-off Tournament was the Tournament of the Week with half of the top ten entered. Canyons upset the former second-ranked Saddleback College in the opening game. Los Angeles Valley struggled to a 66-44 loss against Orange Coast College in the other game of top ten teams. The Semifinals matched Mt. SAC and Orange Coast, last weekUs fifth and sixth-ranked teams. Mt. SAC prevailed over the defending COA champs on their home court by an eye-opening 75-55 score. Canyons met Mt. SAC in the final, but were nipped 57-52. The games were impressive enough to vault both finalists into the top five in the poll. The MVP at Mt. SAC was their 6U1S freshman guard/forward Kia Riley. In three games, she scored 41 points, snagged 19 rebounds, dealt 8 assists and stole the rock twice.

Pasadena City College was the other team to win their own tournament in the Majestic Roundball Classic. Chaffey College provided the greatest challenge in the second round, 67-66. Fresno City College was no pushover in the championship game as the 75-67 score shows.

Club team San Diego Sol took the title at the San Diego Mesa Tip-off Classic, 82-53 over Cerritos College. After Cerritos opened with a 72-43 win over #16 Antelope Valley College, Cerritos rose two spots to #9 in polling. Fullerton College took third with a 59-50 victory over Bakersfield.

The SurfariUs "Wipeout" was the theme song at the Cuesta College Tip-off Classic as the closest of the four games was 41 points. Merced took both of their games by 48 points to take the trophy. Cuesta College stumbled into second place. Deshunna Ricks, a 5U11S sophomore guard/forward of Merced, was given the MVP award.

In the Games of the Week, San Jose City College came close to upsetting Sierra College, but fell seven short, 67-60. Sierra maintained their seven spot in the poll. San Jose still moved into the rankings with a #20 debut. Down south, Compton Community College defeated L.A. Southwest College in a South Coast Conference interdivision game. Compton stayed at #18.

Tournament of the Week
The Vaquero Shootout at Glendale Community College boasts #3 Ventura, #9 Cerritos and #19 Antelope Valley. Ventura and AVC meet in the first round, November 14 at 5:00 PM.

Games of the Week
North Region: #12 North Solano will brave the snow to vie for a possible state ranking with a 6:00 PM Saturday game at #15 North College of the Siskiyous. South Region: #5 Canyons looks to avenge their loss at Mt. San Antonio on the same floor, Saturday at 5:30 PM.
