Pasadena
City College Perfect After 11 Contests
[ Poll,
Week of 12/22/03 ]
Pasadena City College (11-0)
is the sole undefeated Community College women's basketball team west of the
Rocky Mountains. It was only enough to put them at #3 on this week's CCCWBCA
poll. They will get their shot at #1 as the college holding the spot, Mt. San
Antonio, plays them twice in South Coast Conference North Division. Ventura
College stands between them at #2. Sierra College got its first loss and fell
two spots to #4. The only change in the top eight of the region polls was Merced
College moving to #1 in North Region, but the statewide voting panel kept them
behind Sierra.
Merced and Mt. San Antonio
were idle last week. Neither were particularly damaged. Mt. San Antonio's lead
was narrowed, although Merced reclaimed the top of North Region and nearly captured
#4 in the state.
The Tournament of the Week
was held at College of San Mateo. Reedley College upset previously undefeated
Sierra in the championship game, 56-54. Amy Parrish of Reedley was named MVP.
Hartnell College overcame Allan Hancock College 59-52 for the consolation championship.
Santa Monica College took third place.
Pasadena put their undefeated
season on the line at Irvine Valley College last Saturday for the South Region
Game of the Week. Irvine Valley lost 69-56, but stepped up a spot in the state
ranking to #19.
Ventura had a couple of
games at Oxnard College's crossover event. Ventura was the only squad to survive
unscathed with wins over College of the Sequoias and Cypress College. Cypress
fell off the state rankings after their 33-point loss to Ventura.
It had been quite awhile
since Los Angeles Valley College had been unranked. They fell from the rankings
last week. At Antelope Valley College last weekend, they swept the tourney and
regained a #12 South Region ranking. Syretta Coleman (L.A. Valley) was named
Most Valuable Player after a 61-58 victory in the championship game over the
host school. Antelope Valley dropped a notch to #11 in the state poll. Moorpark
College took third place while Imperial Valley College earned the consolation
trophy.
Chaffey College entered
the Orange Coast College Tournament unranked like L.A. Valley and came away
with the championship, also like L.A. Valley. In the semifinals, Chaffey upset
Orange Coast 65-61 and Saddleback College had a mild upset of Cerritos College,
64-46. Chaffey pulled off its second-straight upset of state-ranked teams in
the final round with a 63-58 victory over Saddleback. Shanae Blake of Chaffey
earned MVP honors. The South Region voting panel awarded Chaffey a #15 ranking.
Cerritos and Orange Coast dropped to the bottom five of the State top 20 and
Saddleback improved to #12.
Foothill has played strong
at times this season and looked to upset Ohlone College on Wednesday in the
North Region Game of the Week. Ohlone was a bit much with a 17-point victory.
Ohlone did not escape upsets last week. They lost their weekend match against
De Anza College in a double-overtime home-court thriller, 76-71, to fall to
#17 in the state.
Mendocino College debuted
their four-team tournament on Saturday. All four games were competitive with
Porterville winning the title over Mendocino, 72-59. Mission College is much-improved
over last season which showed as they evened their record with a 59-58 win over
Yuba College for third place.
Tournament of the Weeks:
sat-mon San Jose (#8 Canyons, Cosumnes River, #14 Fresno, #3 Pasadena, San Francisco,
#10 San Joaquin Delta, #13 Santa Rosa)
North Region Game of the
Weeks:
Golden Valley Conference begins play Saturday, January 3rd. #10-North Lassen
travels to #8-North Butte for a 5:30 pm opener. The winner would take a step
towards a home playoff game and the automatic berth.
South Region Game of the
Weeks:
#12 Saddleback will try to break into the state top ten at #2 Ventura, Saturday,
January 3 at 7:00 pm.
