Mt. San Antonio College and Merced Are Unanimous #1's

[ Poll, Week of 12/01/03 ]

Mt. San Antonio College culled all of the #1 votes in this week's CCCWBCA State and South Region Polls. Idle Merced swept North Region balloting and was the unanimous choice for #2 in California. #3 Sierra College switched spots with fellow Bay Valley Conference team #4 Contra Costa College. Ventura College maintained the fifth spot with College of the Canyons not far behind.

The Tournament of the Week was the Ventura College Women's Basketball Tournament of Champions. Half of last week's top ten participated. Mt. San Antonio dominated all comers by 32 and 24-point wins in the first two rounds and a 102-76 score in the title game over host Ventura. In the Mounties' wake was Contra Costa College which had to go into overtime with #11 Orange Coast to take 3rd place. The consolation bracket was snagged by #20 Lassen College over a much-improved Imperial Valley.

Sierra has their toughest opponent of the season on Tuesday's North Region Game of the Week. Reedley College had previously upset a top ten squad and was raring for a repeat performance. It was Sierra's night as they won 66-49. Despite the loss, Reedley rose a spot in the state poll to #8.

Cypress College had better luck in the South Region Game of the Week. There were merely ranked #15 in the region while Cerritos was #6 for the state and hosting. Cypress made a stand for a playoff berth by pulling off a 69-62 upset over the Falcons. Cypress earned a #18 state ranking while Cerritos slid to #9.

Riverside Community College took the College of the Desert Thanksgiving Classic championship. Desert gave RCC the closest game with a 74-61 score. Riverside started the 3-game series with an upset of #17 Compton Community College, 80-55. Compton stayed at #17 after redeeming themselves with wins over Los Angeles Southwest College and a close call with Rio Hondo, 54-49 for the consolation title.

Los Angeles Pierce College ran the final tournament of the week. San Bernardino Valley College went unchallenged on their march to the trophy. Pierce took second place. Cerro Coso College earned third place over Victor Valley while Cuyamaca College got its first two wins of the season on the consolation side.

Tournament of the Week:
The 2003 Gilcrest Invitational at College of the Sequoias often previews the COA Championships. This season may be the same as #1 Mt. San Antonio and #2 Merced have a potential match-up on Friday. Six of the top 13 colleges will play and 14 of the 16 entrants are on state poll ballots. The championship will be decided Sunday, December 7 at 4:00 pm.

North Region Game of the Week:
Foothill College will try to make their absence from the state rankings a short one as they host #16 Santa Rosa Junior College, Wednesday at 6:00 pm.

South Region Game of the Week:
Wednesday will find Fullerton College risking their #7 ranking in the gymnasium of #10 Pasadena City College, 7:00 pm tipoff.
