Top Five Hold Steady in CCCWBCA Poll

[ Poll, Week of 11/24/03 ]

Positions remain unchanged amongst the top five colleges in this week's CCCWBCA State Poll. In rank order, they are Mt. San Antonio College (5-0), Merced College (6-0), Contra Costa College (2-0), Sierra College (4-0) and idle Ventura College (2-1).

It was light schedule for COA teams being an extra third week between the beginning of the season and Thanksgiving weekend. Mt. San Antonio went to Long Beach City College on Friday and won 97-36.

Merced had a more formidable foe at #15-North's Cosumnes River College, but asserted themselves to a 79-56 victory. Cosumnes dropped out of the North Region rankings.

Sierra also made a road trip to Feather River College. The climb up the mountains did little to slow the Wolverines as the 87-39 final shows.

Contra Costa and Butte began their season at the only tournament of last week, the Butte College Team Sports Classic. Both schools won handily in the first round, but Butte forced Contra Costa into overtime in the title game. Contra Costa lifted themselves to a 77-73 win. Butte fell to #13 in the State Poll, but rose a spot to #6 in North Region voting.

Reedley College had better luck with upsets with an exciting 56-52 score over San Joaquin Delta College in North Region's game of the week. #9 Reedley lept seven spots higher for state while Delta dropped five.

Cerritos continued their annual series with host Orange Coast College. Cerritos entered with a #7 ranking, a spot behind the #6 Pirates. They left with the #6 booty, dropping Orange Coast to #8, nearly breaking into the top five. The score was 77-72.

Tournament of the Week:
The Sixth Annual Ventura College Women's Basketball Tournament of Champions has half of the top eight teams entered: #1 Mt. San Antonio, #3 Contra Costa, #5 Ventura and #8 Orange Coast College. The event runs from Friday afternoon to Sunday's 4:00 PM championship game.

North Region Game of the Week:
#9 Reedley tries to upset another top ten team at Sierra, Tuesday, November 25 at 5:00 PM.

South Region Game of the Week:
#15 South Cypress College will argue for a playoff spot at #3 South Cerritos, Wednesday, November 26. Call Cerritos for gametime.
