Mt. San Antonio Widens Poll Margins

Mt. San Antonio College widened its lead in the CCCWBCA polls this week. They were the unanimous choice in region balloting and given the nod by 18 of the 21 state ballots. Merced College overtook idle Contra Costa Costa for the top of North Region and the runner-up ranking for California. Sierra College jumped to fourth after a 91-39 win over Modesto Junior College. Ventura College fell from third to fifth.

Mt. San Antonio College hosted their 2nd-straight game against College of the Canyons in the South Region Game of the Week. At the Mt. SAC tourney championship game, it was a five-point win. Six days later brought the Mounties their second win of the series, 80-53. Canyons fell to #8 with the loss.

Merced hosted and won its own tournament, following Mt. SACUs and PasadenaUs footsteps. In a contest of undefeated teams, Merced downed conference rival Reedley College in the championship game, 86-64. Merced previously won the Cuesta Tip-Off Classic. Alisha Costa was named Most Valuable Player. She is a 5'11" sophomore guard for the Merced Blue Devils.

Foothill played two close games to finish the Merced Tournament. The semifinals saw them nod to Reedley 68-67, but a 67-65 overtime final vs. Cypress College earned them the third place trophy. Reedley rose a notch to #16 while Foothill fell three spots to #18. #13 Santa Rosa Junior College also fell out of the top ten after a close 52-48 loss to Merced and an overtime 75-73 win over Los Angeles Valley College for the consolation championship.

Glendale Community College hosted the Tournament of the Week which had an early upset with #15 Antelope Valley College snaring an upset win from Ventura. The Marauders were not able to continue their upset string after dropped a 74-60 semifinal to Cerritos College. Cerritos could not keep upsets away as Fullerton College stung Cerritos 64-58 for the trophy. Despite the loss, Cerritos rose two spots in the state poll to #7. Fullerton debuted at #14.

Cosumnes River College met San Joaquin Delta College in their own championship game, but could not overcome the #10-ranked team, 84-61. Delta averaged 24-point wins in their three matches. Camille Small of Delta was awarded MVP.

Ohlone College got a late start to the season, but used their first three games to take the College of the Sequoias Fall Classic. A 58-53 score over Fresno has them stand undefeated at 3-0. Sequoias nipped Shasta 58-57 for third place. The consolation bracket title went to Merritt College over Los Angeles City College, 58-55.

Santa Barbara City College hosted a four-team bracket. Irvine Valley College proved to be the class of the tourney with a 21-point win over their IVC sister college, Imperial Valley. Santa Barbara split their weekend with a 52-46 win over El Camino College for third.

Solano Community College braved the weather to take on College of the Siskiyous and drove back down to the valley the fruits of a 63-55 win in the North Region Game of the Week. Solano is one spot outside the North Region top ten while Siskiyous fell off that poll.

Tournament of the Week:
#11 Butte College and #3 Contra Costa open their season at Butte's Team Sports Classic. College of the Redwoods and Yuba College welcome them to the fold.

North Region Game of the Week:
#10 San Joaquin Delta tests their perfect 4-0 record at #16 Reedley College on Wednesday at 5:00 pm.

South Region Game of the Week:
#7 Cerritos College travels to #6 Orange Coast College with the winner hoping to crack into the top five. The game is scheduled for Friday, November 21 at 7:00 pm.
