Final
Region Polls Capped by Pasadena and Santa Rosa
[ February
14, 2005 Poll ]
With region seedings being
announced on Monday, the final CCCWBCA Polls were taken this week. Pasadena
City College is #1 for both the South Region and State polls. North Region is
led by Santa Rosa Junior College which is third in this week's State Poll. Antelope
Valley College is sandwiched in-between in second. Riverside Community College
and San Jose City College round out the top five in a week where there were
no changes in the top 13.
Pasadena City College remained
unscathed through another week of South Coast Conference's North Division to
have them stand at 24-0 with two games remaining. Cerritos and El Camino colleges
are tied for the lead of South Division at 6-1, having previously split their
two games against each other.
Antelope Valley has two
shots at winning the outright championship of Foothill Conference. They clinched
a share and an automatic playoff berth after handily defeating Victor Valley
Community College Saturday night.
Chaffey is two games behind, but will clinch second place if they beat Rio Hondo
College and Antelope Valley defeats College of the Desert on Wednesday night.
Santa Rosa is in good position
after making it by #19 Contra Costa College last Friday night. The 73-60 win
gives them a portion of the Bay Valley Conference Bay Division championship.
Their biggest challenge this week will be at Solano Community College on Friday,
the current runner-up.
San Joaquin Delta College looks to be headed to share the Valley Division trophy
with Sierra College. Both play the bottom two teams in the standings to complete
their seasons.
Riverside started conference
as the favorite in Orange Empire Conference, but found themselves in last place
after the first week at 0-2. Subsequently, they rolled thorough ten straight
victories to be alone in the lead at 10-2. Orange Coast College nearly upset
them on Wednesday before losing 79-71. Cypress College and Fullerton College
ensured that they would finish in the top three. Fullerton had little trouble,
but Orange Coast found the upset switch and caused Cypress to fall from the
top on Friday night, 84-76.
San Jose City College will
win at least a portion of the Coast Conference South Division crown. Monterey
Peninsula College moved into second after upsetting Ohlone College 82-79 Wednesday
night. City College of San Francisco avoided a home loss against Mission College,
68-59, to sweep their two-game series. The winner of Wednesday's Foothill College
at San Francisco will have the inside lane towards the North Division automatic
playoff berth. If Foothill wins and Mission defeats Foothill on Friday, then
there is expected to be an unusual three-way tie where each college swept one
and was swept by the other.
Lassen College needed a
win against Butte College to have a reasonable chance at a Golden Valley Conference
title share. Wednesday's North Region Game of the Week had Lassen breeze to
a 73-56 home victory. Shasta College got a scare from College of the Siskiyous
Saturday night with a defensive 50-47 win to maintain their slim lead.
Titles were clinched in
both divisions of Western State Conference. Ventura College more than doubled
Allan Hancock College to take North Division. Citrus College won its first championship
with a 78-67 win over Santa Monica College. The win was timely as Citrus lost
its first conference game on Saturday night to College of the Canyons, 57-52,
and fell to a 16 ranking.
Porterville College snagged
a share of the Central Valley Conference plaque with a combination of a win
over Modesto Junior College and a Reedley College defeat of Fresno City College
on Saturday. Reedley and Porterville vie on Wednesday where Reedley needs to
win to keep their title share hopes alive. A loss could cause Reedley to significantly
drop in the standings and hurt their seeding.
Imperial Valley College
has the automatic playoff berth for Pacific Coast Conference. Wednesday evening,
they hosted Grossmont College in the South Region Game of the Week and won 69-59.
A win on Saturday over Southwestern College pushed their league record to 8-0.
It would take a major upset to keep them from taking all of the title this week.
Pasadena City College ends
their season with the team most likely to knock them from their undefeated pedestal
in their conference. They host #8 Mt. San Antonio College at 5:30pm on Friday.
Saturday is the final day of the 2004-05 regular season. If games go to form,
a home win for Lassen over Shasta that night will cause a 3-way tie for the
Golden Valley championship between the two colleges and Butte. Tip-off is scheduled
for 5:30 pm.
