SCC North Takes Top Spots in State Poll

[ Poll, Week of 1/12/04 ]

South Coast Conference's North Division only had five teams, but two of them occupy the top of the CCCWBCA Poll. Mt. San Antonio College (19-1) remains #1 and undefeated Pasadena City College (16-0) rises to #2. Ventura (15-3) dropped to #3. The preseason #1, Contra Costa College, regains the #1 spot in North Region and moves to #4 in the state. As a result, Sierra College falls to #5.

The closest game in South Coast Conference interdivision play last week was 20 points. Cerritos College maintained its #14 ranking after defeating #18 Compton Community College 67-44. Compton dipped to #19 this week. SCC intradivision play begins on Friday. A possible #1 vs. #2 game would happen January 28 at Pasadena.

In Western State Conference North Division, Ventura had two fairly easy wins, although after starting with a 19-point run, struggled with turnovers against unranked Cuesta College. Moorpark College scored 60 against Oxnard College's 56 on Friday to break into the state rankings at #20. Moorpark is the only team to have defeated Mt. San Antonio this season. #7 College of the Canyons took the lead in South Division with double-digit wins over two regionally ranked squads, Los Angeles Valley College and Santa Monica College.

Bay Valley Conference started without any of the bigger contests. Contra Costa and #13 Santa Rosa Junior College got off to a 2-0 start along with Merritt College for Bay Division. Down in the valley, #9 San Joaquin Delta College and Napa Valley College match them while Sierra and Sacramento City College are 1-0 after having a bye.

#6 Merced College started Central Valley Conference play by hosting #15 Fresno City College in the North Region Game of the Week. Merced asserted their position as highest-ranked conference team with a 74-56 victory. Reedley joined Merced atop standings after getting by College of the Sequoias on Friday, 67-54.

Unranked Golden West College upset #9 Fullerton College on Friday, 66-59, and entered the South Region poll at #12. Fullerton fell into a third place tie in Orange Empire Conference and #11 in the state poll. #11 Saddleback met #17 Irvine Valley College on Wednesday in the South Region Game of the Week. Irvine Valley fell out of the rankings after a competitive loss, 68-57, while Saddleback was elevated to #10. Golden West and Saddleback lead the eight member colleges at 2-0.

Foothill Conference continued with Chaffey College keeping their lead at 3-0. San Bernardino Valley College nearly knocked them off, but came four points short, 78-74. #12 Antelope Valley College is half a game behind at 2-0 after sweeping the week as did Cerro Coso College.

#15 Butte College assumed the lead in Golden Valley Conference. Shasta College just missed a home upset on Friday, 60-56, which would have tied them for first place. Butte traveled to College of the Siskiyous on Saturday in a match to determine first place. The Butte score that night was a 76-54 victory.

Coast Conference and Pacific Coast Conference picked up a few games while they wait for their conference schedules to begin. PCC teams dropped all three contests. Coast Conference stuck to interdivision games. The biggest was a matchup of the bottom two teams in the rankings, #19 City College of San Francisco and #20 Ohlone College. After tying in regulation, CCSF pulled away in the first overtime period, 96-89. It helped both teams' rankings. CCSF is #16 this week and it is a #18 nod for Ohlone.

North Region Game of the Week:
Top Central Valley Conference squads vie on Saturday at 5:00 pm with the winner possibly acquiring the solo lead. #8 Reedley will attempt the upset at #6 Merced.

South Region Game of the Week:
#11 Fullerton can climb back up Orange Empire Conference standings if they can hold off #10 Saddleback. The game is set for 7:30 pm at Fullerton.
