Mt. San Antonio and Contra Costa Named #1 Region Seeds

The regular season has ended and the seedings for the North and South regions have been announced. Mt. San Antonio College and Contra Costa College were named the highest seed in their regions by the seeding committees and will have the home-court advantage throughout the regionals. Both regions have two brackets with each bracket's survivor meeting in the COA Basketball Championships presented by Magali Farms, March 12-13, at University of San Diego's Jenny Craig Pavilion...

South Coast Conference delayed the end of its interdivisionals until last Wednesday. As it so happened, that included a game between the top teams in its two divisions, #1 Mt. San Antonio College at #13 Cerritos College. Cerritos forced overtime at the buzzer, then nailed a trey at the overtime buzzer to upset the Mounties 89-86. Mt. Last Wednesday, #1 Mt. San Antonio College traveled to undefeated #2 Pasadena City College in the South Region Game of the Week. Pasadena's defense took control of the first half to leave by seven, holding the Mounties to 23 points. Mt. SAC came back to be up by three points with under a minute remaining. #1 vs. #2 Showdown on Wednesday

A rarity is to have the top two basketball teams in the same conference, let alone the same division. On Wednesday, January 28, #1 Mt. San Antonio College (22-1) will travel to #2 Pasadena City College (19-0) in the first of their home-and-home games on the South Coast Conference North Division schedule. The South Region Game of the Week is scheduled to tip-off at 5:30 pm. Both are undefeated against common opponents. Mt. SAC won those games by an average of 6 points more than Pasadena, but Pasadena being at home could be a balancing factor.....

The CCCWBCA Poll this week only had one change in the top 10, Fullerton College which improved to #10. South Coast Conference North Division rivals Mt. San Antonio College (21-1) and undefeated Pasadena City College (17-0) occupy the top two for the second consecutive week. Comets Sighted Atop De Anza Tournament, Re-enters Top Five

De Anza and Foothill Colleges co-host the second of two 16-team events of the season, the De Anza Tournament. Participants included two of the top three teams of the North Region, #1 Merced College and #3 Contra Costa College. The Contra Costa Comets survived a scare by Foothill in the quarterfinals to meet Merced for the championship. The final score was CCC 67, Merced 66. Contra Costa took Merced's #5 state ranking, but Merced kept its #1 spot in region voting...

This week's lesson: if you are the #1 team by a wide margin and have to lose, make it to an unranked team. Despite losing to a surging Moorpark College, Mt. San Antonio College remains the top squad in COA. The remaining undefeated teams are #2 Sierra College (9-0) and #4 Pasadena City College (10-0). Ventura College held onto its #3 ranking while Merced College dropped to fifth in this week's CCCWBCA State Poll.

Merced and Sierra in Split Decision

In this week's CCCWBCA polling, Sierra College moved to the runner-up spot in the state rankings with Merced College in fourth. Meanwhile, in North Region voting Merced came in at #2 while Sierra finished third. Once again, Mt. San Antonio College tops the State Poll. Ventura landed between Sierra and Merced for third. Contra Costa College dropped to the final spot in the top 5.
