Skyline and San Diego Mesa to Play for Team Championship
The Hyundai California Community College Women's Badminton
Championships will be held this Thursday through Saturday in Hart
Gymnasium at Irvine Valley College.
This is the second straight year that the event has been at Irvine
Valley.
The team championship will be played on Thursday, May 10, at 1 p.m. The
top team from Northern California, Skyline College, will meet the top
team from the Southern California, San Diego Mesa College, for the
title.
This is Skyline's first year of competition in women's badminton. The
Trojans finished the regular season with a record of 9-1 and won the
Coast Conference. They received an automatic bid to the state final.
San Diego Mesa, which is the defending state champion, moved into this
year's title match by defeating Pasadena City in a regional matchup last
week. The Olympians went undefeated in the Orange Empire Conference and
finished the regular season with a record of 13-1.
The individual singles and doubles championships will also be held at
Irvine Valley. They will start at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 11. The first
three rounds will be played on Friday. The tournaments will conclude on
Saturday, May 12. Semifinal rounds will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday
with the championship matches in both singles and doubles to follow.
Women‚s badminton is in its second year as a community college sport.
