HYUNDAI - CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE WOMEN'S BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIPS

Orange Coast's Tran wins singles and doubles crowns

IRVINE-Orange Coast College's Cynthia Tran completed an undefeated season by sweeping through the competition to win the singles title at the Hyundai California Community College Women's Badminton State Championships at Irvine Valley College Saturday afternoon. The top-seeded Tran defeated third seed Phyrun Than of El Camino College, 11-3, 11-2, in the championship match.

Tran, a freshman out of Garden Grove, improved her record to 30-0 on the season. She also only dropped one game (60-1) all year. Tran had earlier won the Orange Empire Conference individual singles crown.

Tran added to her list of titles by capturing the state doubles championship, as well, on Saturday at Irvine Valley. Tran and teammate Rosie Pham, who were seeded No. 1, beat the second-seeded team of Rachelle Manzano and Katsue Takahashi of San Diego Mesa, 15-5, 15-10, in the championship. The Orange Coast duo also claimed a conference doubles title this season.

In other badminton action on Saturday, Thu Tran of Pasadena City College won the consolation singles title. Thu Tran also teamed up with Caroline Kuo to take the consolation doubles title.

This was the second straight year that the Hyundai California Community College Women's Badminton State Championships were held at Irvine Valley College.
