IRVINE-Seedings held pretty true to form Friday afternoon in the opening
rounds of the Hyundai California Community College Women's Badminton
State Singles and Doubles Championships at Irvine Valley College.
Top singles seed, Cynthia Tran of Orange Coast College had no trouble
in winning her first three matches. She received a bye in the first
round and then defeated Tricia Sanford of Skyline College in the second
round and Mayce Yeung of Skyline College in the quarterfinals.
Joining Tran in the semifinals is the third seed, Phyran Than of El
Camino College. But there were some upsets. Unseeded players Katsue
Takahashi of San Diego Mesa College and Diana Chuang of DeAnza College
also moved into the semifinals.
Second seed Rachelle Manzano of San Diego Mesa College was beat by
Chuang and fourth seed Eiei Tun of City College of San Francisco was
defeated by Takahashi in the quarterfinals.
The semifinal matches, which pit Tran against Takahashi and Than versus
Chuang are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, May 12 with the state
championship final to follow at noon.
In doubles play, the top-seeded team of Tran and Rosie Pham of Orange
Coast are through to the semifinals. Manzano and Takahashi, the No. 2
seed, from San Diego Mesa, and Chuang and Christine Lee, the No. 4 seed,
from DeAnza also advanced.
The lone unseeded team to reach the semifinals was Lisa Apel and
Jacqueline Myers of Irvine Valley. The Laser duo defeated second-seeded
Tun and Shinmei Wong of the City College of San Francisco.
The doubles semifinals, which will match Pham and Tran against Chuang
and Lee and Apel and Myers against Manzano and Takahashi, will take
place at 11 a.m. on Saturday with the finals to follow at 1 p.m.
