The
South Coast Conference was officially authorized by the California State
Athletic Committee of the California Community and Junior College Association
(CCJCA) in October 1967. The South Coast Conference was created in 1968.
Fully sanctioned women's athletics began in 1977-78 when CCJCA voted full
recognition to women's and coed athletics under the same code as men's
athletics. Even though women competed in athletics subsequent to this
time, official state and conference records were not compiled until the
CCJCA granted sanction.
Prior to 1986, when
a state-wide re-leaguing plan took place, the conference included schools
from the San Diego area. After the re-leaguing five South Coast Conference
colleges were joined by El Camino College, Long Beach City College and
Pasadena City College. Since that time, the configuration has changed
with colleges from the defunct Southern California Conference merging
along with the departure of Fullerton and Golden West Colleges.
Currently the South
Coast Conference consists of 12 colleges: Cerritos College, Compton College,
East Los Angeles College, El Camino College, Long Beach City College,
Los Angeles City College, Los Angeles Harbor College, Los Angeles Southwest
College, Los Angeles Trade-Tech College, Marymount College, Mt. San Antonio
College and Pasadena City College. Additionally, the South Coast Conference
"hosts" many colleges in various sports activities as their
own conferences do not have enough participants in that particular sport.
Football is not played
as a sports activity in the South Coast Conference. Teams from Compton
College, Los Angeles Harbor College, Los Angeles Southwest College participate
in the Western State Conference Football Conference . Cerritos College,
El Camino College, Long Beach City College, Mt. San Antonio College and
Pasadena City College participate in the Mission Football Conference.
