With an Olympic-sized pool and a state-of-the-art scoreboard, the Pasadena City College Aquatic Center was this year’s choice as the site for the 2002 California Community College Swimming and Diving State Championships.
This Thursday-Saturday, May 2-4, PCC and Head Coach Terry Stoddard hosts the state meet only a week after the college hosted the South Coast Conference Championships.
The Lancers qualified two men’s swimmers to the state championships in Temo Ortega and Brian Kennard. Ortega qualified for three events including the 1,650-yard freestyle, the 500-freestyle, and the 400-individual medley. Kennard will swim in the two freestyle events.
At the state meet on Thursday, May 2 and Friday, May 3, preliminary heats will take place in the 10 a.m. morning sessions followed by the finals heats at 5 p.m. On Saturday, May 4, the morning session begins at 10 a.m. and the finals at 4 p.m.
The diving competition will take place at Caltech’s pool. On Thursday, May 2, the women’s 1-meter diving starts at 11:30 a.m., followed by the men’s 3-meter event at 2 p.m. On Friday, May 3, the men’s 1-meter is scheduled for 12:30 p.m., followed by the women’s 3-meter at 2:45 p.m.

At the South Coast Conference Championships April 25-27, Ortega was impressive winning both the 400-individual medley and 1,650-freestyle events. Ortega’s winning time in the 400-IM was 4:30.06 and he swam a 17:18.72 to capture the 1,650 title. The latter time was the eighth fastest in the state this season. Kennard was third in the 1,650 at 17:35.13.
Pasadena finished in fourth place in the women’s competition with 404 points. The PCC men’s team placed sixth at 290 points. In combined scoring for the SCC meet and dual meets during the conference season, El Camino and Long Beach tied for the women’s team championship, while Long Beach won the men’s title.
In women’s conference competition, PCC’s Krysta Lyons took fourth place in both the 50-yard and 100-yard butterfly events with respective times of 29.24 seconds and 1:04.66. Devon Lee was fifth in the 200-individual medley at 2:33.78. Carla Correa won the consolation heat of the women’s 500-freestyle with a time of 6:02.12.
No PCC women’s swimmers qualified for the state meet.
