Football: Reisbig steps down as head coach after 11 seasons with the Vikings

Larry Reisbig, Long Beach City College's all-time winningest coach, has announced today that he will resign from the head coaching position after 11 seasons with the Vikings.

Reisbig goes out on a winning note after the Vikings closed the 2002 season with a 52-24 win over Compton College this past Saturday in the Western State Bowl. LBCC ended the season with an 8-3 overall record and were champions of the Mission Conference Northern Division.

For the sixth time, Reisbig was named Mission Conference Northern Division Coach of the Year in 2002.

His finest season came in 1995 when Reisbig guided the Vikings to an 11-0 record and a national championship. Reisbig's 11-season career record of 83-34-1 is the best in LBCC school history.

"It's just time," said Reisbig on his decision to step down. "I've been doing this for 39 years now. It's time to back off and let somebody else do the job. The energy and enthusiasm level for this position is extremely demanding and I'm not able to put into it what I used to. The agony of losing gets greater after time goes on. We've had some outstanding teams and some great seasons here during my time. I'll always remember that 1995 team. I'm glad my final year was a winning one."

Reisbig says he plans to stay on with the team as an assistant coach for the Vikings and would like to continue to teach at the college.

Long Beach City College men's athletic director Chuck McFerrin is proud of Reisbig's accomplishments on and off the field.

"It's been a tremendous 11 years of leadership on his part," McFerrin said. "He's attained tremendous success on the field with championships and wins and losses, but his ultimate strength is in the leadership of young men and assisting them to move on to four-year institutions to acquire a degree and improve the rest of their lives."

To fill Reisbig's vacancy, the college will conduct an internal search of the Long Beach City College faculty to fill the head football coach position.

"The college understands the importance of filling this position as quickly as possible and looks to act soon on the matter," McFerrin said.
