Marisa
Parker, Butte College
Marisa
Parker leads by example, in the classroom, on the athletic field, and
in the community. She finished her academic career at Butte College with
a 3.92 GPA, while earning membership in the Phi Theta Kappa honor society
as a triple major (Liberal Arts, Social and Behavioral Science, and Language
Arts).
On
the athletic field, Parker attacked her goals with the same determination
she demonstrated in the classroom. She set a Butte College record in the
women's hammer throw en route to back-to-back appearances in the Northern
California Regional Finals. In 2004, Parker finished 5th at NorCals, and
served as a leader in the Roadrunner's capture of the Golden Valley Conference
championship.
Outside
the athletic arena, Parker served as a tutor in the Center for Academic
Success, where her success as a student and as an athlete lent credibility
to the tutoring program among her fellow student athletes. She also worked
part-time in the athletic equipment room as well as another 15-20 hours/week
at an off-campus retail store.
Somehow, Parker also found the time to volunteer off-campus, as a tour
guide at a local historical site and at the Butte Community Action Agency's
Head Start Program where she attended pre-school classrooms and helped
organize arts and crafts activities.
Parker
is currently majoring in Exercise Biology at the University of California,
Davis, where she is also a member of the Aggie's Track and Field team.
Maximilian
Zavodny, Palomar College
It's
no surprise that Maximilian "Max" Zavodny enjoys swimming and
running; he's always been one of the first to cross the finish line in
every activity he pursues.
Zavodny
graduated from Palomar College in June of 2004 with 122 credits, two associates'
degrees and a 4.0 GPA - at the age of 17. As a member of the Palomar College
cross country team in Fall 2003, Zavodny qualified for the regional championships.
As a member of Palomar's swim team in spring of 2003 and 2004, Zavodny
specialized in long-distance freestyle events, with his best time of 17.42.41
coming in the mile.
He
was once quoted as saying "Whenever I am faced with a challenge,
I always think to myself that I've done something harder than this in
swim practice."
Zavodny's
community service record is also impressive. While a student at Palomar,
he worked with a local animal care business to fundraise for the Long
Beach Animal Shelter. In addition, he volunteered at swim meets sponsored
by the Inland Coastal Aquatics Club, serving in a variety of event management
roles.
Currently,
Zavodny is attending the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena,
where he is studying Astrophysics, a field he plans to follow through
to a doctorate degree. In fall 2004, Zavodny competed as a member of the
Cal Tech water polo team, and is also a member of the swim team. In spring
2005, he'll pursue a spot on the track team, and plans to run cross country
and play water polo again next fall.
