Santiago Canyon College Women’s Soccer Opens Up with a Victory

Posted on: August 29 2001 3:58 PM

Santiago Canyon College women’s soccer opened up the 2001 season with a 1-0 victory over Los Angeles Pierce College on Monday, August 27 at Santiago Canyon. It was the first time in the short two-year history of the program that the Hawks have opened up the season with a victory.

Whitney Sheline scored at the 14-minute mark on a pass from Maria Patino for the only score of the game. Santiago Canyon outshot Pierce by a 16-8 margin—dominating play for the first 35 minutes of the game.

Pierces best scoring chance came with one minute left in the first half when Kasey Cota broke in all alone on Santiago Canyon goalkeeper Jessica Herrera. Herrera came out to break up the scoring chance—thus preserving the shutout.

With the victory Santiago Canyon improves to 1-0-0 on the season. With the loss, L.A. Pierce drops to 0-1-0.

Next up for Santiago Canyon is home game on Wednesday, August 29 against Santa Monica College at 4:00 p.m.
