2003 OEC BASEBALL PRESEASON
SELECTIONS
The Orange Empire Conference
baseball coaches have tabbed three-time defending state-champion Riverside Community
College as this year’s favorite.
The Tigers received 64 points
— seven of eight first-place votes in the annual poll.
Santa Ana, with 57 points,
earned the other first-place vote and was picked second, followed by Cypress
with 46 points.
Saddleback received 43 points
to be picked fourth, followed by Golden West with 33 points. Orange Coast (22
points), Fullerton (21) and Irvine Valley (10) round out the tough eight-team
conference.
Also picked was the Preseason
All-OEC Sophomore Team and the Preseason Player/Pitchers of the Year.
Riverside 3B Kyle Blumenthal
earned Player of the Year honors, while teammate RHP Jesse Chavez and Cypress’
RHP Justin Keadle were voted Co-Pitchers of the Year.
Blumenthal hit .343 last
season, playing all 53 games in right field. He collected 72 hits, 3 HR, 2 triples,
16 doubles, 53 runs, and 55 RBI.
Chavez led the Tiger staff
with a 14-2 record (1.96 ERA) and posted 114 Ks in 119.1 innings. Keadle went
7-4 with 4 saves for the Chargers (4.24 ERA).
