COA Cultivating Alumni and Former Employees

The COA is continuing a series of outreach efforts to attract former alumni and employees to give back to the educational system that launched their athletic and/or service careers. An informational packet was sent to the recipients of the COA’s Sports Hall of Fame award and the response has been encouraging.

Respondents represent the best of California community college athletics and include:

Jim Fassel, Head Coach,

New York Giants (Fullerton College)

Fred Claire, former Executive VP, Los Angeles Dodgers (Mt. SAC and El Camino colleges), inducted 2000

Bill Hooper, President, Student Insurance (1993 hall of fame inductee)

Chuck Kane, Vice President, Student Insurance (former COA chair and president of Riverside College)

Dick Vermeil, former head coach, St. Louis Rams (Napa Valley/San Mateo colleges)

Susie Atwood, Olympic swimming medalist (Long Beach City College, inducted 2000)

Joe Marvin, coach, Cabrillo College (1997 hall of fame inductee)

Jerry Tarkanian, head coach, CSU Fresno men’s basketball (Riverside, Pasadena colleges, inducted 1999)

Al Schlueter, Butte College administrator and former COA chair

George Stanich, former athlete at Sacramento City and administrator at El Camino (inducted to hall of fame in 1999)

Jill Angel

Lieutenant Commander

California Highway Patrol

(Orange Coast College, inducted 1999)

Sue Brown

Former COA Board Chair

The COA recently sent a second mailing to various alumni and has spent a considerable amount of staff time reviewing sources to create a working database of alumni and a current contact roster. COA staff consultant Bob Seagren will work with the COA associate commissioner’s office in the ongoing effort.

In addition, current and recently retired community college employees have expressed an interest, including the Honorable George Miller, Dave Obenour (San Jose), Ursula Rauch (Mt. San Antonio), Bob Rump (Grossmont College), Cindy Clark (Sacramento City), Paul Debolt (Contra Costa), Stephen Epler (Yuba), and Ken Grace (Chabot) and Herb Loken (Bakersfield).
