Game Notes- Long Beach successfully defended its 2005 State Title by beating West Valley 7-4. The defending Champions jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first quarter and were able to maintain that advantage nearly the entire game. West Valley, the improbable third seed from the North, pulled within two goals twice, but could not close the gap. Long Beach Goalie George Alberson kept West Valley from getting back in the game with a tournament-high 13 saves in the goal.

Game Notes- In a rematch of the 2005 State Title game Riverside and Long Beach squared up again for another overtime game, however this year the title went to Long Beach. The Vikings and Tigers met five times this year and all of them were in tournament finals. Riverside won the first three meetings with solid wins, but Long Beach snapped the Tigers 32-game winning streak with a one-point win at the Southern California Regional Finals and again in today’s State Finals. The win gave Long Beach its third State Title of the last three seasons and this season marked the Vikings fifth straight trip to the State Title game. 2006 Southern California Player of the Year Ashling Taylor scored the winning goal on a fast break with two minutes left in the second overtime.

Game Notes- Diablo Valley took control of the game right away and never let the hometown Fresno Rams back into the game. The Vikings increased their lead every quarter before both teams lit up the scoreboard for four goals in the final period. Sophomore Jenna Casady scored three goals for the Vikings today and also scored a pair in their win over Golden West that vaulted them into the third place game. Casady was named to the 2006 All State Tournament team.

Game Notes- The Cuesta Cougars beat Golden West for the first time since 1992 to claim third place in the 2006 COA State Championships. A Cuesta goal off a direct throw by Craig Erickson with :43 left in regulation sent the game to overtime where the Cougars outscored the Rustlers 2-1. Brett Richesin’s third goal of the game clinched the win for the Cougars with :58 seconds left. The Rustlers entered the tournament as the top team from the North, but losses to West Valley on the first day coupled with today’s loss and a close win over Diablo Valley left the Rustlers in fourth place and kept them from adding to their State leading 19 State Championships.
