Game Notes- A Golden West and West Valley game is usually the final game of the State Championships, not the first, but the game lived up to any and all advanced billing. West Valley jumped out to a three goals lead, but the Rustlers, chasing the program’s 20th State Title, battled back and eventually took the lead in the third quarter, 7-6. The two teams traded goals until Jerome Keif scored his first goal of the game with :27 left in the 6:09 in the game for a 10-9 win. Two minutes later the Vikings’ Jacob Young scored his second goal of the contest to provide the game winner and knocked off the top seeded Rustlers.

Game Notes- The top seeded team from Northern California squad Santa Rosa became the second #1 seed to fall on the first day of the 2006 COA State Championships. The Bear Cubs and the Cuesta Cougars traded goals all the way through the first half, but Cuesta All American Mark Stephen scored in the final minute of the first half to give the Cougars a one-point advantage at the intermission. The Cougars took control of the game by outscoring the Bear Cubs 4-0 in the third quarter. Santa Rosa’s Joey Gullikson scored a pair of goals in the final period, but the Bear Cubs didn’t have enough to complete a comeback in the program’s first ever State Championship appearance.

Game Notes- In another upset, that isn’t really an upset, West Valley, the third seed from the North, defeated Diablo Valley, the second seed from the North, to secure a berth in the 2006 State Championship Game. West Valley had been the top ranked team in the North all season long, but a loss to Santa Rosa in the Northern California Regional Semi-finals landed them in the finals spot from the North. The Vikings upset the #1 seed from the South, Golden West, in the tournament opener and their win over NorCal rival Diablo Valley clinched their spot in the title game. The games outcome was never really in doubt as Diablo Valley was not within a goal of West Valley after the first quarter. West Valley’s Jerome Keif led all scorers with four goals and has six goals on the day.

Game Notes- Defending State Champion Long Beach City kept its hopes of a repeat alive by beating Cuesta in their first game of the day. T
he Cougars ended the first day with a 1-1 record and failed in a bid to reach their first title game since 1990. The Cougars will need a Long Beach to beat Santa Rosa tonight to play in the third place game on Saturday. Long Beach opened a 3-1 lead with a minute left in the first quarter and Cuesta never closed that margin the rest of the game. The Vikings Sam O’Hare led all scorers with four goals in the game for the Vikings. The Vikings went on a 5-1 run to tend the game and move within a game of the title game.

Game Notes: Defending State Champion Long Beach advanced to the State Title game for the second straight year after knocking the top seed from Northern California Santa Rosa. The game started with the two teams trading the first four goals, but Long Beach went on a 7-2 run at that point to take control of the game. The Bear Cubs countered with three goals in the last two minutes of the first half to close the gap to 9-7, but the Vikings sealed their fate by scoring three quick goals after the intermission. Santa Rosa’s loss eliminated them from the tournament and sent Cuesta to Saturday’s third place game with Golden West. Long Beach will face West Valley in the title game.
