Long Beach defended its State Title against the winningest team in women’s water polo’s brief history. The Vikings scored the first goal of the game off the opening sprint, but Golden West scored the next two goals to take the lead after the third quarter in a defensive stalemate. The Vikings Monica Johnson evened the game at two with 3:33 left in the game and a minute later the Rustlers Geraldine DiTomasso scored her first goal to take back the lead, but Jessie Oshann scored her second goal with a minute left to send the game to overtime. DiTomasso scored in the first overtime to take back the lead, but once again Oshann matched her to tie the game. In the second overtime DiTomasso scored her third clutch goal of the game only to watch LBCC’s Lauren Lloyd shot tip off a teammate and find the back of the net to send the game to sudden death. The sudden death period had both teams playing tough defense and keeping the offensive opportunities to a minimum, as it had been earlier in the contest, but as time ran out the Vikings Nicole Carreon put up a shot on the buzzer that found the back of the net and gave her team a title.

West Valley defended its State Title to beat Golden West for the second straight year. The marquee game between the top seeds from both the North and the South battled for the title. Golden West held a commanding 4-1 lead early in the second quarter, but goals by Mike Dixon and Brent Garrett closed the gap to 4-3 at the intermission. Halftime adjustments by the Vikings turned the tide of the game as three goals gave them a 6-4 lead with six minutes to play. The Vikings couldn’t tally another score, but continued to control the game. With just over a minute to play Mike Lee scored the Rustlers first goal since early in the second quarter, but it proved to late as West Valley held on for the win.
