Claremont – Unseeded, but not unheralded, Jack Hui posted a pair of singles wins to advance to Saturday’s semifinal rounds of the 2006 California Community Colleges Commission on Athletics (COA) Individual Men’s Tennis Championships.

Hui, competing for the College of the Desert (COD) Roadrunners, upset the seeded John Spoerl (Diablo Valley College) in opening round action in dominating fashion, 6-1, 6-1, before defeating Walter Lima (Ventura College), 3-0 (retired).

Rounding out the men’s singles action from Friday, top-seeded Jordan Colman (Cabrillo), second-seeded Francis Yoshimoto (Desert) and seeded Stephen Feddersen (Desert) all posted a pair of singles victories to advance to Saturday’s semifinals rounds.

Thus, out of the four semifinalists, three will be representing COD.

On the women’s side, three of the four seeds also survived the first two singles rounds on Friday.

Top-seed Susan Soukvath (Santa Rosa) won both of her matches in straight sets, as did seeded Jaleh Mazaheri (Orange Coast). Souksavath will face Mazaheri in one semifinal at 7:30 a.m.

Unseeded Emily Paulson (Orange Coast) defeated Anka Vivagh (CC San Francisco), 6-2, 6-3, before upsetting seeded Keha Baird (Fresno City), 3-6, 7-5, 6-1, to advance to Saturday’s semifinal round.

In the last singles match of the day, Yui Shimizu (Grossmont) breezed through her opening-round match, defeating Christina Cancid (Santa Rosa), 6-0, 6-1, before outlasting Jessica Rice (Orange Coast) on center court, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, denying the OCC Pirates from having three semifinalists. Shimizu will face Paulson in Saturday’s other semifinal.

Editor’s note: Friday’s doubles action was incomplete at post-time. Missing results will be available with Saturday’s release.
