Pirates Snap Santa Ana Unbeaten Streak With 3-2 Win

OCC's women's soccer team forms a victory tunnel to celebrate the men's soccer team's 3-2 win over Santa Ana Monday by forming a victory tunnel.

It couldn't have possibly been any closer.

Orange Coast College's men's soccer team withstood a furious attack from visiting Santa Ana Monday (Nov. 6) and came away with a 3-2 victory, winning for the seventh consecutive time and snapping the Dons' 70-game unbeaten streak.

The Pirates are now 15-3-4 overall, 10-2-1 in Orange Empire Conference play, while Santa Ana, the defending state champion and the state's top-ranked team all year, is 17-1-4, 12-1-1.

In the game's final minute, Santa Ana had a chance to tie, but Pirate goalie Hilario Arriaga, putting the finishing touch on one of his finest games of the season with 14 saves, deflected a hard shot that he was unable to gain control of. As the ball trickled dangerously close to the goal, Coast defender Spencer McDearmon arrived just in time and cleared the ball to midfield, ending the Dons' threat just seconds before the final whistle.

The Pirates started the scoring early, as Geno Vitale-Sansosti scored off a cross from Josh Miller just five minutes into the game to take the lead. Coast doubled the lead 16 minutes later when Aaron Siemers set Matt Moseley up with a one-on-one with Don goalie Juan Martinez. Moseley fired into the lower-left corner of the net for the goal.

Miller headed a pass from Jesus Cervantes into a wide-open goal in the 41st minute for an apparent 3-0 halftime lead, but Santa Ana's Alejandro Licea scored on a penalty kick in the 44th minute. The Dons added the game's final score five minutes into the second half.
