STOCKTON -- Different year, same result. Monterey
Peninsula College continued its dominance by capturing the Northern California
Community College Championship for the second straight year Monday at Stockton
CC.
After winning seven of 11 tournaments this year and clinching
the team title after just nine tournaments, the Lobos were confident coming
into the championship. With four returning players from last years championship
squad, Head Coach Justin Russo knew they were primed for a victory. "We
expected the best because we have been playing very well all season." MPC
left Stockton with not only the team title, but the individual winner as well.
David Boyles won the individual honors by virtue of an impressive 71-67--138
on the 6,470 yard layout .
On a day of perfect conditions, MPC hung on to the lead
it established after the morning 18 to beat runner-up American River by two
shots. MPC was led by individual winner David Boyles. Teammate Anthony Valdez
shot 68-71 to tie for second at 139 and David Jackson shot 71-73--144 to tie
for seventh. MPC's scores were rounded out by Chris Donnelly (72-76--148), Cory
Campbell (75-74--149) and Brian Rodriguez (73-83--156). Team scores were based
on the best five of six scores for each team in each round.
MPC and American River each qualified for the State Championships,
to be held next week at The SCGA Golf Course in Murrieta. Also qualifying (by
finishing in the top three) was Foothill (369-355--724).
Anthony Valdez, Jason Simon
and Vince Venard tied with 139 after 36 holes of regulation. Venard came in
second place alone after a birdie on the first playoff hole. Valdez placed third
while Simon came in fourth after the playoff.

Individual winners David Boyles, Vince Venard, Anthony
Valdez and Jason Simon. |
