Chabot Recaptures the Crown

 May 7, 2001

SALINAS -- Chabot College of Hayward got back to its winning ways in capturing the Northern California Community College Championships on Monday at Corral de Tierra CC.

In an incredibly tight race to the finish, Chabot edged defending champion Monterey Peninsula College by a single shot, 753-754, despite the fact that Monterey Peninsula outshot Chabot by 14 shots in the afternoon round. The format for the event took the best fives scores out of six in each of the two rounds.

Last year, MPC put an end to Chabot’s reign as champion, ending a streak of four straight championships. Chabot put itself back on top with its fifth title in six years for 10th-year head coach Zack Papachristos.

Chabot was led invidiually by Josh Williams who opened with a 69 in the morning round that was the best of the tournament. His closing 76 put him third individually and helped the Gladiators clinch the title. Garrett Fogel chipped in with a 71-81, while Carlos Corona shot 74-76, Matt Thornton shot 76-80, Eric Tanphanich shot 83-85 and Eric Clum shot 77-73.

American River College (760) took third place, while College of the Sequoias (762) rounded out the top four teams that advance to the State Championships next week (May 14) at North Ridge CC.

Justin Madison of San Jose City College took first individually with a 3-under-par 141 (70-71). That beat Jim Schafter of College of the Sequoias (70-73 -- 143) by two shots. Madison advanced to the State Championships by being among the top six individuals not representing any of the top four teams. Joining him next week will by Andy Barnum of Butte College, Bryan Church of Fresno City, Donnie Kennedy of Sierra College, Kealoha Rodrigues of Yuba College and Eric Larson of San Jose City College. Rodrigues and Larson prevailed in a sudden-death playoff.
