College women's dynasty continues in cross country; SBVC's men win college's first
state title since 1968

H-a-a-a-r-r-r, mateys!
After another broadside, the Orange Coast College Pirates' ship continues on
under full sail in women's cross country.
Coach Marco Ochoa's runners won OCC's sixth straight state championship at the
30th California Community College Women's Cross Country Championships in Fresno's
Woodward Park on Saturday, Nov. 18.
OCC outdistanced Glendale College in the scoring by a whopping 71-134 score.
The Pirates were led by Elda Hernandez (18:55) and Erendira Uriostegui (18:56)
who finished fifth and sixth respectively over the 5,000 meter course. Kristin
Glen (19:11) was 12th while Kelly Oelschlager (19:34) was 22nd and Kimberly
Jennings (19:39) was 26th. OCC's sixth runner, Claire Fleming (20:38) was 68th.
The first five figured in the scoring and only Hernandez and Oelschlager are
sophomores. The odds for 7-of-7 in 2007 appear very high for OCC which has won
nine of the last ten CCC women's cross country championships.
Rounding out the top five teams in the 30th CCCWCC Championships were: Bakersfield,
145; Southwestern 152 and Riverside, 158.
Southwestern's Sarah Apgar won the individual title finishing first with a time
of 17:42 which was 24 seconds ahead of Glendale's Tove Berg.
While OCC continued women's dominance, Coach Wes Asford's new guys on the block
from San Bernardino Valley College won SBVC's first state championship in any
sport since 1968. The Wolverines victory over East Los Angeles was 114-132.
Finishing in 9th place, sophomore Raul Gonzales (20:35) led his freshman teammates
to victory. Samuel Melton (20:42) was 14th; Matthew Reyes (21:02) finished 22nd;
Matthew Prentice (21:10) placed 28th and Jose Marquez (21:26) brought home the
title finishing 41st. Two other freshmen, Timothy Wolff and Jacinto Mencias
did not figure in the team scoring, but like OCC's women's team, it looks like
the Wolverines have experienced talent in abundance for 2007.
Rounding out the top five teams in the 43rd CCCMCC Championships were: El Camino,
137, San Diego Mesa, 155 and Mt. San Antonio, 158.
Finishing first in the men's race was Oscar Ogwaro of East Los Angeles with
a time of 19:56 over 4 miles. El Camino's Daniel Belay was runner-up at 20:15.
The top 14 runners in both races receive All-State and All-America recognition.
