Power Rating to Determine Hyundai California Football Championship Teams

For the second consecutive year, a power rating formula will be used to decide the teams that will represent the Northern and Southern California regions in the Hyundai California Community College State Football Championship, to be held December 9, 2000, at the Mineral King Bowl in Visalia.

The final power rating will be calculated following completion of the state's football bowl games on December 2. The teams from each half of the state with the highest rating will be invited to play in the 1 p.m. contest.

Last year, the formula was used to determine the top two teams from each region, who faced each other in the preliminary bowl game. City College of San Francisco defeated Butte College and Allan Hancock College edged Ventura College to qualify for the state title game, which was won by San Francisco.

Following is the power rating formula, as set forth in the California Commission on Athletics Football Guide.

Total of:

A. Team wins multiplied by 2;

B. Total of opponents' wins divided by 10;

C. Wins over teams ranked 1-5 in the COA Poll multiplied by 3;

D. Wins over teams ranked 6-10 in the COA Poll multiplied by 2;

E. Wins over teams ranked 11-15 in the COA Poll.

For example, San Francisco in 1998:

A. 11 Wins x 2 = 22

B. Opponent wins (65) divided by 10 = 6.5

C. Wins over COA Poll teams 1-5 (3) x 3 = 9

D. Wins over COA Poll teams 6-10 (1) x 2 = 2

E. Wins over COA Poll teams 11-15 (1) x 1 = 1

TOTAL: 40.5
