BOB
STANGEL,
MT. SAN JACINTO - COACH
Inducted: 2003
Bob was born in Burchard,
Nebraska and lived in Tecumseh where he starred in football, basketball, baseball,
and track. His family moved to San Diego where Bob was a star athlete for St.
Augustine in 3 sports. Bob was awarded a football scholarship to Oregon where
he played for John Robinson and John McKay for one year.
Coming back to California
he transferred to Chaffey College where he played quarterback. Transferring
to Long Beach State University, Bob played football and completed his education
earning a BA degree in Physical Education. He later earned his Masters degree
from Azusa Pacific.
Bob was an assistant coach
at several high schools before he got his first head coaching position at Notre
Dame High School in 1968 where he compiled an overall record of 37 wins, 13
losses and 1 tie. During his tenure there, Bob won 3 league championships, made
the CIF playoffs 5 years in a row and won the first CIF championship in Riverside
County history. Bob was voted CIF Coach of the Year in 1971.
Moving on to Sunnyvale high
school for one year he continued his winning ways and then became the head coach
at Mt. San Jacinto College. Under his guidance the Eagles won 4 conference championships,
1 Southern California Championship, and participated in 4 Bowl games. His teams
won 154 games and lost 104 and tied 4 for a 59% winning average. Bob is seventh
in number of wins in the state of California. Coach Stangel has been voted Coach
of the Year seven times from 1985 to 1999. In 1998 he received the ultimate
honor of being voted the California State Coach of the Year. As fine wine does,
he improved with time and had his most successful year in his 26th and final
season. Mt. San Jacinto finished with the highest ranking in its history by
being ranked #3 in Southern California, # 5 in the state and # 9 in the nation.
Coach Stangel has played
and integral role in the evolution and leadership of California Community College
football. His foresight, expertise, and over-all contributions to Community
College football cannot be measured, only appreciated. Bob has been described
as a tireless hard working taskmaster, super organizer, and a players coach.
He has coached 53 All State, 23 All Americans, and 6 professional players. He
influenced over 350 student/athletes who earned the opportunity to continue
their educations at four year colleges or Universities with scholarships. In
addition he has over 75 former players that have become coaches at all levels.
Bob has been married to
his wife Elaine for 42 years and they have two children, Bob Jr., and Deborah
Ann.
