CSM HOSTS TOP WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT IN STATE THIS WEEKEND

The College of San Mateo
women's basketball team plays at home for only the second time this year, hosting
the top California tournament this week, Friday through Sunday (Dec. 19-21).
The eight team CSM Invitational,
the "tournament of the week" according to the state coaches association,
includes Northern California's No. 1 team and second in the state ranked Sierra
College of Rocklin (9-0), ninth-ranked Reeldey (7-2), plus Santa Monica (7-3)
- which is currently No. 14 in Southern California.
The host Lady Bulldogs
(1-6) are coming off a 68-59 victory at Modesto in their last outing (Dec. 9).
They will face Feather River (0-7) in a 7 p.m. first round game Friday, following
a 5 p.m. match-up between unbeaten Sierra and Allan Hancock (2-8). Winners of
those two games meet in the semifinal Saturday at 7 p.m.
In the other bracket, Reedley
opens the tournament at 1 p.m. Friday against Cabrillo (0-7) and Santa Monica
faces Hartnell (1-6) at 3 p.m. Winners meet in the other semi Saturday at 5
p.m.
Sunday's final round starts
at 11 a.m. with the consolation finals, followed by the third place game at
1 p.m. and the championship contest at 3 p.m.
Lisa Harrison, a 5-8 sophomore
guard from Half Moon Bay High, is CSM's scoring leader to date with a 15.3 average.
Soph point guard Mary Hill (4-10) from Mercy (SF) leads in assists (5.3) and
has been scoring at an 8.4 clip.
Up front, forwards Stephanie
Vorises (5-9 soph forward from Sacred Heart Cathedral) is averaging 7.3 points
and 9.1 rebounds, Evangline Chau (5-6 frosh from SF Mercy) is averaging 7.9
points and 5.3 rebounds, and C.C. Ellington (5-5 soph from South San Francisco)
is averaging 7.5 points and 6.6 rebounds.
Other key players include Krystle Flower (6-0 frosh center from Burlingame),
Christa Fernandez (5-6 frosh guard from El Camino), Petrina Kaluzhny (5-5 soph
guard from Lowell), Christina Gotelli (5-4 soph guard from Menlo-Atherton, and
Patricia William (5-5 soph guard from Jefferson).
CSM has been on the road
since its Nov. 8 season opener against Los Medanos. After this weekend, the
Bulldogs won't be back in San Mateo again until a four game home stand starts
on Jan. 9 with De Anza..
RANKING NOTES: Mt. San
Antonio (14-1) leads the current state coaches' poll, ahead of Sierra, Ventura
(10-3), Pasadena (10-0), and Merced (11-2). The top team in the CSM's Coast
Conference is Ohlone (8-1), ranked No. 14.
